Well 2021 has already begun in Jersey City, and it's starting to sound like 4 more years for Steven M. Fulop and his Council slate. Why would I make such a drastic prediction so early? With 500 people showing up on a bitterly cold February night, as the Mayor announced his Council slate, while also raking in $250k in campaign donations, NUMBERS DON'T LIE.
It would be lunacy to think the Mayor and his team are not clear favorites to win a 3rd term for Team Fulop. All the talk about the Hudson County Democratic Organization and the Hudson County Black Democratic Caucus opposing the reelection of Team Fulop can now be laid to rest.
The Mayor was predicated to be announcing only 4 City Council Candidates on his running slate, but he announced 5; they are Ward A, B, and F Council Members Denise Ridley, Mira Prinz, and Jermaine Robinson, also running with him are two potential successors to the Mayor, City Council President Joyce Watterman and City Councilman At Large Danny Rivera.
Last night brought out a "Who's Who in Jersey City Politics" with attendees such as the Dean of the Westside, Freeholder Bill O'Dea; Hudson County Clerk Junior Maldonado; Hudson County Assembly members Nicholas Chiaravalloti, Raj Mukherji and Angela McKnight.
One of the peculiar sightings was Ward C Councilman Richard Boggiano, viewed by many as an Anti-Administration Candidate. But some are now predicting there’s a possibility Boggiano could join the Fulop ticket, as well as his Northside compadre, Ward D Councilman Michael Yun.
Ward E Councilman James Solomon was not in attendance, but it's widely known Fulop supporters would love to attach Jersey City Municipal Prosecutor Jake Hudnut to the Team Fulop ticket for the Ward E City Council seat. More on this possibility in a future blog.
Last night was all about sending a clear message to potential candidates, Fulop and his Party of (5) which will eventually be (9) will not be lacking in financial support or foot soldiers to secure 4 more years in City Hall.
By announcing his Southside ticket, which includes 3 members of the Hudson Black Democratic Caucus, it should put to rest the rumors of the Caucus potentially running a Mayoral candidate or its own Council ticket. It should also be noted that veteran political operative and the known political advisor to Sen. Sandra Cunningham, Joe Cardwell, was in attendance.
One Political Informer last night called me to inquire would former Team Fulop member, Councilman Rolando Lavarro, still running for Mayor in 2021?
Lavarro should now be listening to what my favorite rapper Jay-Z's calls his "Moment of Clarity," and in Lavarro's case it may be his "Moment of Reality".
Rolando now knows Fulop has the institutional political support and assisted with the Mayor's ability to raise ungodly sums of money on any given night - How can Rolando quite see a path of victory???
To any candidate contemplating a run for office in 2021, and before you start the feel-good mantra of "You don't need money, You need the People" that’s cute. But it's not a reality in Jersey City politics.
Does anyone remember James Solomon raised over $200k in 2017 to win his independent ward seat?
Last night belonged to Fulop and “The Party of Five,” who seem very much on their way to trying to assist Fulop in doing a 3rd term, which is unprecedented for Jersey City, and might I add, hasn't been done since the Hague mayoralty over 80 years ago.
