Generally speaking, I admire those that choose to serve on a Board of Education – volunteering their time and yet having to run in costly and competitive elections. It is surely a sacrifice. But it is also a responsibility – to be a role model most particularly for the children who depend on them to run the school district. It starts with honesty and integrity. So when I see something that does not pass the sniff test, I am going to speak up.Today’s chronicle is about Jersey City School Board Trustee Matt Schapiro. You may recall that back in November, during the hotly contested school board race, there were a number of public debates. At one in particular the Chronicler was on the panel and had the opportunity to question the candidates. Then candidate Matt Schapiro was directly asked the status of the ethics charges he had filed against incumbent Lorenzo Richardson. Matt Schapiro clearly stated, and it is on tape, that he was no longer involved with the ethics charge, implying he was no longer a plaintiff in the case.Catch him on camera here:https://www.facebook.com/HudsonYoungDems/videos/1317827911694925/ Watch @ 1:13:30 - 1:21:37That was the right thing to do – because in fact if he ran for a seat on the board with a standing ethics charge against a current board member he would be doing exactly that which he charged Lorenzo Richardson had done. And hypocrisy is not a good quality for a candidate for a school board seat. So imagine our surprise when the Chronicler was made aware of court documents that indicate Matt Schapiro is still very much the plaintiff in the complaint against JCBOE Vice President, Lorenzo Richardson. He has not withdrawn his name and as he so well explained in the debate, that is a clear ethics violation. Hypocrisy is bad. Lying is worse. Matt Schapiro is just a couple months into his first term on the Board of Education – and by all accounts not shy to express his opinions. But really, who who should listen to a Board member who lied in his campaign and now sits on the board with a standing ethics charge against one of his colleagues. Matt Schapiro should immediately drop the ethics charge against Lorenzo Richardson if he wants any chance of remaining on the Jersey City, Board. Most certainly he has opened himself and the board up to another costly round of ethics charges (see the statute here). But honestly, the Board should take a careful look at his lies and hypocrisy and decide whether he has the qualities and qualifications to serve the children of our fine city.Voters narrowly elected him in November 2017 - and apparently under some false pretense. As voters of this great city we deserve immediate answers. While we seek that clarity and the truth which Matt hid, he ought to take a back seat to all board business. He is a liability at this point that we cannot afford. And while we are at it, we ought to demand statements of clarification from all those that ran with or appeared on campaign literature with Matt Schapiro. If they knew he was lying and in conflict with the code of ethics and did nothing, they could be in trouble too. Wake up Jersey City! Demand THE TRUTH! Demand that the board sees to have him removed from the JCBOE. We deserve better even if Matt Schapiro thinks it is ok to be a liar an a hypocrite as an elected official in Jersey City.
